An open mat is an event held by most BJJ gyms and it consists of rolling, sparring, trying out new techniques, hanging out with other people, and meeting new people.

You can basically do whatever you like and that is the main goal of open mats. There is no instructor, and it’s much more relaxed than a regular training session.

Open mat is one of the most popular events in BJJ gyms since it gives you the freedom to try out new techniques, get some advice from senior members, and learn something new.

If you are new to the gym and don’t know anybody there, don’t be shy to attend an open-mat event. Most people will be friendly and helpful, and if you are lucky, you can learn from purple, brown, or black belts.

It’s also important to remember that open mats are not a competition, so don’t worry if you lose. The purpose of an open mat is to have fun, relax, and learn.

Open mat is also a great way to get a feel for BJJ competitions since there is no instructor that will watch over you.

These events usually last up to an hour, and it’s encouraging to do research if any gym in your proximity is having an open mat so you can attend and train with new people.

Most open mats are both Gi and No-Gi.
